Protecting Steel Reinforcement from Corrosion

The most frequent questions, I got asked  in all of my lecturers  is how to protect the steel bars, the second one is how to repair the concrete structure members. 

First let me ask you a question, Can the Doctor Provide you with the appropriate  Medicine  before Diagnosis  your case?

If your answer is NO, then you are certainly aware that you must have have a strong background about this problem and study it  well..Then, start to preparing the action plan and the required steps to get it in perfect way.

Therefor, the first step you should understand very well the Corrosion Phenomina and then the Causes of the Corrosion and the different between them, as it is described in brief in last two articles.
The choose of the best type of the protecting the steel reinforcement depends on your structure system, your structure life time and also the environmental condition surrounding the structure and the expected cause of corrosion. We can use one or two method in the same time or we can use nothing. These methods as:
  • Use Anodic inhibitor
  • Coating steel bars by epoxy

  • Using zinc coating

Every method has its advantages and disadvantages, that should be known before take decision to apply it or not. For example cathodic protection with impressed current request an electrical source near to your structure if you are in remote area it will not be  practical option and so on. The other main factor which is the criticality of the structure it is mean that a risk analysis should be done by defining the consequence in case of the structure failure or need a major maintenance . On the other side to obtain the probability of occurrence failure of the structure or required a  major maintenance. In addition to that the cost of each system and its reliability for example  CP system has a higher cost but can withstand for over 60 years without any major maintenance.
